The road ends.
You don't.

Beach-ready 4×4 rentals on the Outer Banks. The pavement stops in Corolla. Past the ramp it's open sand, wild horses, and miles of beach that only a real four-wheel drive can reach.

Where the pavement ends, Carova begins

North of Corolla, Highway 12 simply stops at a beach ramp. Beyond it there are no paved roads at all: just miles of open shoreline running to the Virginia line, with houses tucked behind the dunes and wild Spanish mustangs walking the beach like they own it. Because they do.

The only way in is on the sand, and the only way on the sand is four-wheel drive. That's what we rent: 4×4s that are ready for the beach the day you land.

Every rental starts with a quick walkthrough: the vehicle, airing down for sand, and the local beach rules. You head up the ramp with confidence, not guesswork.

Beach driving, without the guesswork

Driving on sand is easy once you know the four things locals know.

Watch the tide

The firm, easy driving lane near the water grows and shrinks with the tide. Plan around low tide and the beach does most of the work for you.

Air down first

Soft sand wants soft tires. Dropping to around 20 PSI keeps you floating on top instead of digging in. It's a five-minute job at the ramp.

Give the horses room

The Carova mustangs are wild and protected, and county rules require keeping your distance. Enjoy them from the truck, camera out, wheels stopped.

Slow is fast

The beach is a neighborhood: kids, dogs, anglers, and sunbathers share it. Keep it slow near people and the whole drive stays easy.
